Impostor syndrome is creeping into my job search
Question: “Somer, It is increasingly hard to separate the context of my job search from impostor syndrome. It leaves me reflecting on the huge value I’d get back from a method or tool to get a pulse on how I’m being received. Suggestions?” ~GM
Many job seekers go through this. With negative or no news comes self-doubt. And when one’s identity is tied to work, what happens when work is gone?
From my perspective:
1. Meet with people you respect, who you know want you to win. Talk vs email.
2. What could people do to help you? Then ask. You may be surprised who has your back.
3. Pay it forward. Giving people advice or feedback will reiterate to you that you know your craft, plus it’s rewarding. What are you best at?
4. Ask for specific feedback from everyone. Nudge people, giving them permission to be honest. This isn’t only interview feedback, it’s on everything you’re putting out into the world.
5. Stop spending time in scenarios that make you feel like an impostor. Certain circles do that. Make note, pay attention.
Having launched my own search firm, I love this question. For those of you who have been there for me, who have my back, who have given me ample feedback, I thank you. You know who you are.
